Words of Wisdom with Waz : Why I’m Not a Fan of Big New Year’s Resolutions (And What to Do Instead)
As New Year’s Eve rolls around, I see it every year.
“I’m going to completely change my life in January.”
“I’m cutting out sugar, alcohol, carbs, and fun.”
“I’m training every day, waking up at 5am, and never missing a workout again.”
And while I love the intention behind these resolutions, here’s the honest truth:
Big, drastic changes rarely stick.
Not because you’re lazy.
Not because you lack willpower.
But because they’re often unrealistic, unsustainable, and built on pressure instead of
support.
Real Change Happens One Small Step at a Time
Lasting change doesn’t come from doing everything at once.
It comes from doing one small thing consistently.
Make one small change.
Turn it into a habit.
Then, when it feels natural, add the next change.
Those small actions compound. And before you know it, six months down the track,
your life looks very different - without the burnout, guilt, or constant starting over.
This Is Exactly Why I Teach the 4 Pillars of Health
When I talk about health and wellbeing, I always come back to the 4 Pillars of
Health:
1. Eat Well
2. Move Well
3. Sleep Well
4. Think Well
You don’t need to overhaul all four pillars at once. In fact, I’d encourage you not to.
Instead, ask yourself:
Which pillar needs the most support right now?
What’s one small change I could make within that pillar?
Here are a few examples:
Eat Well:
Not a full diet overhaul - maybe just adding one extra serve of veggies each day.
Move Well:
Not training seven days a week - maybe a 10-minute walk after dinner.
Sleep Well:
Not a perfect sleep routine - maybe putting your phone down 30 minutes earlier.
Think Well:
Not “never having negative thoughts” - maybe just noticing how you speak to
yourself and choosing a little more kindness.
These changes might seem small, but they’re powerful because they’re sustainable.
Sustainability Beats Perfection Every Time
If a change feels punishing, it won’t last.
If it feels supportive, it has a chance to become part of your life.
Health isn’t built in January.
It’s built in the small, everyday choices you make over the entire year.
So, as you step into the new year, I encourage you to forget the extreme resolutions
and ask a better question:
What’s one small change I could make that I’d still be doing in six months’
time?
That’s where real transformation begins.
Here’s to a year of small steps, strong habits, and meaningful change.
Stay Well
